This is actually the only wooden plane I own. I found one in an antique store in the middle of nowhere Arkansas for $8. It’s from the 1860s as best as I can tell. Just needed a little bit of love. I don’t use it often. But when I need it, nothing is faster at the job. It would take more time to set up a table saw than pull it out of the box and knock out some grooves. Unless I was doing like mass production… which I don’t. I could tell how to hold it just based on the wear and dark spots on the wood. That was pretty cool.

Nice kit, James. Worthwhile even though I just picked up the 45? No need to set anything up for doing box bottoms?

The alternative to a grooving plane is a router table. It takes space, it makes noise, it spews dust and spits chips, and it eats fingers very messily. The silence in your video speaks volumes in favor of doing things the quiet way.

Sooo another important tip… make sure you count your saws before you start… I did the most rookie mistake ever…. Now I need 2 more just to hold the current saws, without adding anymore to the collection.

I know I'm late to the party (just found this video), but wanted to say thanks and ask a question. Your statements in the video don't seem to match what I see as the raw data in your spreadsheet. For example, you said the 2P-10 CA glue was best and the epoxies were next, but in the spreadsheet it looks like the best was Dap Weldwood, 2P-10 was #8, and all the Titebond glues are ahead of the epoxies on the list. Am I reading the spreadsheet incorrectly?

My older brother and I used BLO on guitar fingerboards in his music store back in the early '70s. I don't think we ever worried about it getting on our fingers. Feed & Wax will be my next application on my current guitar boards.

Hi James, I missed this live when it came out so I'm catching up this morning. On Monday I went back through my Grandpa's tool box and discovered some more files and a curved float. The float has no handle but has a hole on each end. I'm guessing this was for a handle of some kind that stretched from end to end. So in Springfield, I'll bring the measurement and look for a handle. I also found a couple of pieces of tin that I can only suspect he used as card scrapers but they are very rusted and pitted. Probably unusable. The files are big honkers. I also found his set of twist bits that went with his Brace. I retire at the end of the month so I'll be a full-time hobbyist. 😁

found this video after spending hours trying to shape up a harbor freight plane to no avail. i am a beginner, so i do not think i can manage to make it usable. after all, i'd like to have some successes so i don't get so discouraged. i will find a vintage stanley and try to restore it. thanks!

Hi James, thanks for sharing! But... frankly, you are a kind of a brute 😅: entering iron rivets with a bronze hammer (metal hardness scale exists also for woodworkers!) and then riveting (fortunately this time with a steel hammer) on the top of a "precision" 123 block... 🙄
